Primary open-angle glaucoma is characterized by glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) development. Currently available clinical and laboratory methods for predicting GON course are time-consuming, require repeat examinations in dynamics and inconvenient for some patients. Besides it's important to predict the risk of GON progression to start correct medical treatment in time.
The paper describes in detail the new clinical and mathematic method for predicting the risk of GON progression, requiring a standard examination of the patient with glaucoma. Relationship between the start time of GON progression and the initial changes in the peripheral visual field was first established. 3-year dynamics (with 3-months interval) of visual functions in 182 patients with primary open angle glaucoma was performed to compile multi-linear model. The article contains a clinical example to demonstrate the prognostic value of the method to predict the risk of GON progression and to start neuroprotective treatment in time.
Keywords: glaucomatous optic neuropathy, visual field, intraocular pressure, predictive mathematical model.
