An important task of modern cardiology is the search and study of new cardiac biomarkers that can help early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, serve as a laboratory tool for evaluating the treatment efficacy, as well as be a prognostic marker of possible adverse clinical outcomes and a significant criterion for risk stratification. The aim of the presented literature review is to consider vaspin as a new diagnostic and prognostic marker in cardiovascular pathology. Vaspin (serine protease inhibitor derived from visceral adipose tissue; also known as serpin A12) is a 47-kDa-protein of 415 amino acids that belongs to the serine protease inhibitor family. According to experimental studies, vaspin has a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism, vascular condition, appetite control and lipid profile. Clinical studies have evaluated, in particular, the role of vaspin in predicting the risk of adverse cardiovascular events, assessing the severity of coronary heart disease, and the efficacy of lipid-lowering therapy. It is expected that further research and clinical studies will justify the use of this biomarker as an additional laboratory tool for diagnosis and prognosis assessment in patients with a cardiological profile.
