The review highlights damaging properties of infectious agents and mass epidemics using several strains of pathogenic microorganisms of different classes (A and B classes according to the CDC classification) as an example. Particular attention is focused on advanced biotechnologies including artificial intelligence, to control spread of pathogenic microorganisms and their timely detection. Under certain circumstances, synthetic biological methods can lead to creation of new pathogenic agents of biological damage. Genetic methods that accelerate selection (including genome editing systems such as CRISPR/Cas9) by many times can also be used to obtain new modified microorganisms with multiple drug resistance which poses a serious problem for both researchers and the global community. Since biosafety is a country-wide issue, an individual review point is focused on legislative documents adopted in Russia to prevent such threats. It is obvious that to develop legal, organizational and practical actions intended to combat new biological risks. It is important to create prerequisites for the development of innovations in natural sciences, as well as intelligent technologies.

Keywords: pathogenic microorganisms, toxins, diagnosis, biotechnologies, multiple drug resistance, biosafety.
