Kulakov National Medical Research Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology, Moscow

Despite achieved successes in recent years in diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI), they continue to be one of the most important areas of modern medicine. According to various data, almost every second woman in the world suffers an episode of UTI at least once in their life, 25–40% of that women over the next 6-12 months experience a relapse of the disease. In pregnant women, complications of UTI are: anemia, thrombocytopenia, preterm birth, placental insufficiency, intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight and diseases of the urinary system, Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome, pre-eclampsia, hypertension, increased incidence of purulent-septic complications in mother and fetus. In this regard, it is important to conduct timely and adequate treatment of this pathology.
Given the need to avoid negative effects on mother, fetus and newborn body, fosfomycin (e.g., Fosfomycin Esparma) in a single dose is a first-line drug for the empirical treatment of uncomplicated UTI in young and middle-aged women and pregnant women, exceeding in application convenience of fluroquinolone, nitrofuran and inhibitor-protected aminopenicillins.

Key words: urinary tract infections, pregnancy, asymptomatic bacteriuria, cystitis, fosfomycin, Fosfomycin Esparma.
