The article presents the features of clinical manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), allowing timely diagnosis, even in the absence of typical symptoms, and modern approaches to the treatment of extraesophageal manifestations of reflux disease. GERD is a chronic recurrent disease characterized by the spontaneous or regularly repeated flow of gastric and/or duodenal contents into the esophagus, resulting in an affect to the distal esophagus with the development of erosive-ulcerative, catarrhal and/or functional disorders. At present, there are many new clinical data, methods for diagnosing and therapy of GERD are being improved; however, the extraesophageal manifestations of reflux disease are still a challenging problem. A characteristic feature of extraesophageal symptoms of GERD is their refractoriness to conventional treatment. With the elimination of reflux, many of these phenomena go away on their own and are easily amenable to medical correction. The article describes pulmonary, cardiac, otorhinolaryngological, and dental GERD «masks». The possibilities of their diagnosis are presented. Modern non-drug and drug treatment methods for GERD are considered in detail, including the administration of antisecretory drugs, prokinetics, antacids, and alginates. The treatment regimens of alkaline reflux are described.

Key words: gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD, esophagus, reflux, extraesophageal manifestations of GERD, GERD masks.
