Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) belongs to functional bowel disorders with high occurrence which principal sign is abdominal pain. Current IBS diagnosis is based on Rome 4 criteria. Despite the fact that abdominal pains and motor dysfunction are predominant clinical signs, these patients presented with a myriad of extra-bowel manifestations, i.e., weakness, migraine headaches, dyspepsia, pelvic floor dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, back pains etc. IBS diagnosis still makes difficulties since there are no specific or sensitive disease markers. In addition to laboratory (blood tests, coprology) and instrumental (endoscopy, contrast radiography, abdominal ultrasound, CT, MRI, bowel transit time test, intestinal manometry) tests, various questionnaires are applied to assess psychological status. The paper addresses detailed recommendations on drug dosage which can be beneficial in IBS. The treatment aims to improve symptoms and to achieve long-term remission.
