The paper discusses one of the most common and socially important liver disorders, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD occurs in 20-33% of adults, its rate varies among the countries. In Russia, NAFLD occurrence was 27% in 2007 and 37.1% in 2014 (increase by 10%). As a result, NAFLD ranks first among liver disorders (71.6%). The data on NAFLD rate in Russia were obtained from DIREG 1, DIREG L 01903, and DIREG 2 population studies. The results of these studies are analyzed. The most common risk factors of NAFLD were identified. The paper uncovers NAFLD pathogenesis and associations between steatosis, steatohepatitis, and fibrosis. Insulin resistance is considered as a possible trigger of this process. Considering NAFLD mechanisms, pharmacological agents with antioxidant properties which improve mitochondrial integrity can be regarded as a pathogenic treatment. Currently, the efficacy of hepatic protectors is argued. This requires different treatment approaches to liver disorders. One of the possible solutions is antihomotoxic therapy. Antihomotoxic medications are homeopathic complexes which contain low doses of plant, animal, and mineral products.

Key words: antioxidants, hepatic protectors, NAFLD, Hepeel, antihomotoxic therapy, nonalcoholic steatosis, nonalcoholic steatofibrosis, inflammatory infiltration of liver parenchyma and stroma, fatty liver degeneration.
