Background: atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic and socially significant allergic condition, necessitates objective monitoring for modern therapeutic interventions. The SCORAD index serves as a validated tool for assessing drug efficacy and maintaining clinical control in patients with AD.
Aim: to evaluate the clinical efficacy of colloidal silicon dioxide based on changes in the SCORAD index during AD exacerbations.
Materials and Methods: the study involved 47 patients (aged 20–41 years) with mild to moderate AD. Patients were stratified into three cohorts: a follow-up group (n=20; moderate AD, received colloidal silicon dioxide for 14 days in addition to standard therapy), a comparison group (n=14; moderate AD, standard therapy only), and a control group (n=13; mild AD) formed to assess whether the SCORAD index could serve as a tool for controlling such a reduction in AD inflammatory activity that might raise the question of severity reassessing of the process.
Results: analysis of the integral SCORAD index (an integral parameter that includes several parameters of allergic skin inflammation) demonstrated a statistically significant clinical improvement in patients with moderate AD following the administration of colloidal silicon dioxide. Selective analysis of the SCORAD index components revealed significant reductions in pruritus, resolution of erythema and skin edema, and marked improvement in sleep quality.
Conclusions: due to its proven clinical efficacy and high safety profile, colloidal silicon dioxide is a promising therapeutic enterosorbent for patients with moderate AD. Objective assessment using the SCORAD index confirms that this agent significantly alleviates itching, improves sleep, and resolves mild inflammatory skin manifestations.
Keywords: atopic dermatitis, SCORAD index, colloidal silicon dioxide, clinical efficacy, pruritus reduction.
