Actually, ureteral stenting is one of the most common methods of internal drainage of the upper urinary tract. According to most authors, potential prolonged passage of urine without contact with the external environment, rapid patient activation and mitigation of inflammatory complications are advantages of this method. Typically, ureteral stents are intended to be introduced for 2–12 weeks; longer stay of the ureteral stent inside the body increases the likelihood of its encrustation significantly. The longer the stent remains in the urinary tract, the more pronounced encrustation is, as well as the higher risks of the lumen closure and severe complications associated with the obstruction are.
Аim: to study causes of stent encrustation including those in patients with non-aggressive urolithiasis without frequent relapses; to determine approaches to treatment of the patient cohort, and to evaluate types of surgical interventions used to manage stent lithiasis. The paper presents clinical case reports of long-standing internal stents, as well as it describes methods of surgical interventions for different clinical variants of the disease and the treatment outcomes in the Urology Departments at the Central Clinical Hospitals "RZD-Meditsina" in Kirov and Barnaul. The conclusion is made about importance of following scheduled dates of surgical interventions in patients with stents in the urinary tract, and adverse consequences (i. e., prolonged disability, forced multi-stage treatment, and long-term rehabilitation) were assessed.
Keywords: urolithiasis, ureteral stent, "forgotten" encrusted stent, transurethral laser lithotripsy, cystolithotripsy.
