Erectile dysfunction (ED) - is a multifactorial disease that significantly affects the quality of men’s life. As a rule, it is associated with various concomitant diseases. The correct approach to the treatment of ED is the changes in the patient’s way of life and the treatment of the underlying diseases that led to this problem. However, such an approach is often not effective enough, therefore, pharmacotherapy with phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors comes to the aid of the patient and his treating doctor. The drug of the first choice for the treatment of ED is the drug sildenafil, which was first introduced on the market in 1998. This article reviews the literature of clinical trials on the effectiveness of sildenafil in various categories of patients suffering from ED and premature ejaculation. It should be noted, that sildenafil is not only effective in the treatment of these diseases, but it is also a safe drug, which is proved by the considerable amount of accumulated clinical data. These and other points make sildenafil the drug of choice in the treatment of men with a violation of sexual function.

Key words: erectile dysfunction, erection, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, sildenafil.
