Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are amongst the most common medicines used in clinical practice. NSAIDs inhibit inflammation and provide analgesic and antipyretic effects. These agents are widely used to reduce acute and chronic pains in musculoskeletal disorders, i.e., inflammatory and degenerative diseases of joints and spine, diffuse connective tissue disorders, and extra-articular soft tissue disorders as well as diseases with low back pains, osteoporosis, and other painful bone diseases. NSAIDs are also prescribed for inflammatory cardiopathies, the prevention of thrombosis, pre- and postoperative management (acetylsalicylic acid), headaches, dysmenorrhea, and a myriad of other inflammatory diseases manifested with fever and pain. However, NSAIDs may result in adverse cardiovascular and gastrointestinal side-effects. A variety of NSAIDs are currently available, and each agent has specific advantages and disadvantages.
Key words: NSAIDs, rheumatic disorders, low back pains, osteoarthrosis, gastrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, meloxicam.
