One of the strategic pathways in solving the rational nutrition problem in underweight children with reduced appetite – dietary supplement (DS) use in food with a high content of biologically significant substances such as L-carnitine to ensure the body’s energy processes.

Aim: effectiveness and tolerability studies of the DS “Kidz”, syrup with carnitine, in the complex therapy for underweight children with reduced appetite.

Patients and Methods: the study included 60 children from 1.5 to 5 years old with low body weight (less than 25% centiles according to the centile chart “body weight / height”) and reduced appetite. Children were randomized into 2 groups at a 1:1 ratio. Children from the main group were prescribed the DS “Kidz”, syrup with carnitine, 2.5–5 ml once a day for 90 days. Children from the control group were prescribed diet therapy without the DS with carnitine addition.

Results: it was noted a statistically significant increase in children body weight after 1 month from the beginning of the DS “Kidz”, syrup with carnitine, administration compared with baseline, as well as with this indicator in children from the control gro up. Moreover, this effect persisted for 3 months (p<0.05 in all cases). Also, an improvement in appetite and sleep and an increase in concentration and exercise tolerance were marked in association with the studied DS intake for 3 months. None of the children from the main group registered any allergic reactions or other side effects.

Conclusion: The effectiveness and good tolerability of the DS “Kidz”, syrup with carnitine, were shown. Adding that, there was noted good compliance with this DS. The DS “Kidz”, syrup with carnitine, use in underweight children with reduced appetite allows increasing body weight, significantly improving the functional state of the body and increasing the compensatory-adaptive mechanisms and adaptive resource.

Keywords: preschool children, underweight, asthenic syndrome, carnitine, correction, dietary supplement.
