Hearing loss as a main reason of the cognitive impairment in the elderly
Age-related hearing loss (presbyacusis) is associated with degenerative changes and reorganization of the peripheral and central parts of the auditory pathway; it is the most common sensory deficit in elderly patients.
Presbyacusis varies in the onset (over 50 years of age on average), rate and severity of hearing loss. The key features of this age-related condition are bilateral, symmetrical, progressive hearing impairment, high frequency thresholds elevation and poor speech intelligibility.
Hearing loss accompanied by poor speech intelligibility may lead to social isolation, depression, cognitive impairment in the elderly and has been considered one of the risk factors of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Early efficient elderly patient’s rehabilitation improves the quality of life, social functioning and mental health.
Key words: age-related hearing loss, presbyacusis, cognitive impairment, hearing aids, cochlear implantation.
