Patients' adherence to physicians' recommendations is the essential component of chronic diseases treatment. The paper addresses the relationship between compliance and psychological, clinical, therapeutic, social factors and specific features of medical care. Several studies have demonstrated that patients are more likely to be adherent to their medication if they understand the disease and the rationale for treatment. Eye drops usage has its own set of challenges that must be recognized and settled by physician. Compliance to medications can be improved by following steps: enhanced patient education; therapeutic program optimization; improved healthcare accessibility (including longer office hours, evening hours, shorter wait times), and better physician -patient relationships (stronger trust). Better patient medication adherence can prevent unnecessary vision loss, improve quality of life and finally save the overall healthcare system's burden.
Key words: compliance, internal picture of the disease, psychological features, therapeutic program optimization, cataract, Catalin.
