Helmholtz Moscow Research Institute of Eye Diseases, Moscow

Most patients with glaucoma are elderly people with chronic concomitant diseases. Systemic effect of ocular drops can exceed the effect of oral administration of the same medicine. Today the main groups of antiglaucomatous drugs are beta-blockers, alpha-agonists, M-cholinomimetics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, prostaglandin analogs. Frequently patients with glaucoma receive the same group of medicines topically (aseye drops), and orally/ parenterally (as tablets or injections), which increase their side-effects. Furthermore, interactions of different groups of medicines can decrease their therapeutic effect. Medical treatment of glaucoma implies instillation of antiglaucomatous drugs for a long time for maintaining the normal level of IOP. Efficacy and safety of medicines is the most important aspect, as glaucoma is the chronic disease, which requires a permanent treatment. Correct doageg of prolonged forms of medicines in combination with recommendations for the safe use of ocular drops can solve many problems, associated with side effects . The paper addressees the problem of drug interaction used for glaucoma's and other diseases'treatment to decreaseside effects and to control teir efficacy.
Key words: glaucoma, side effects, drug interaction.
