Purpose: to evaluate dynamics of visual functions in patients with «dry» form of age related macular degeneration (AMD), primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and axial high myopia (AHM) in the background of three-months continuous «Ocuvite Complete» («Bausch & Lomb Incorporated») treatment.
Methods: The study involved 35 patients (67 eyes; 8 males). 11 patients (22 eyes, aged 47,8±8,0 years, all women) of the 1st group had axial high myopia. 10 patients (18 eyes, aged 65,7±9,7 years, all women) of the 2nd group had verified «dry» form of AMD (stages I and II according to AREDS). 7 patients (13 eyes, aged 59,7±11.1 years, 2 males) of the 3d group had verified compensated stable POAG (stages I-III, data of optic disc ophthalmoscopy and automated static perimetry). The control group included 7 healthy patients (14 eyes, aged 41,3±11.8 years, 6 males), with near emmetropic eyes and no eye diseases. All patients underwent standard ophthalmic examination and following diagnostic procedures: digital fundus photography, macular pigment optical density evaluation (MPOD), optical coherence tomography (OCT), achromatic spatial contrast sensitivity (ASCS) measurement.
Results: Improvement of best corrected visual acuity (far acuity) was observed in all patients treated with «Ocuvite Complete» («Bausch & Lomb Incorporated») as well as . Besides, statistically significant improvement of MPOD and ASCS values was observed. The largest increase of ASCS was revealed in patients with «dry» form of AMD. Improvement of static automated perimetry parameters was observed in all study groups. Sensitivity of the foveal retina improved significantly in patients with axial myopia . Mean retinal sensitivity and sensitivity of the foveal retina improved significantly in patients with «dry» form of AMD. Statistically significant improvement of all studied parameters (MD, PSD and sensitivity of the foveal retina) was revealed in patients with POAG. Positive dynamics of morphometric parameters also was revealed in the 3d group (increase of nasal and temporal choroidal thickness). No positive dynamics of investigated visual function was observed in the control group.
Conclusion: Study results showed efficacy of 3-months continuous treatment with «Ocuvite Complete» («Bausch & Lomb Incorporated») in patients with «dry» form of AMD, POAG and axial high myopia as positive dynamics of visual functions and morphometric parameters were observed in study groups. This medicine can be recommended as preventive therapy in patients with degenerative posterior segment diseases.
