In the context of global population aging (proportion of people over 60 years set to 22% by 2050), age-related viability (i. e., the body's ability to maintain homeostasis in terms of age-associated changes) is a particularly relevant subject matter. Unlike conventional lifetime indicators, age-related viability addresses preservation of adaptive reserves, and quality of life is reflective of subjective well-being. The international classification of quality of life components, adopted in scientific practice and based on the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, includes physical health (assessment of functional activity, pain syndromes, and energy level), psychological state (anxiety, depression, and subjective happiness), and social interactions (supportive relationships, social participation). The paper relevance is associated with a need for integration of a biopsychosocial approach in gerontology. The paper contains a comparative analysis of the terms "age-related viability" and "quality of life". According to recent data, age-related viability and quality of life are complementary, but not identical concepts, and an interdisciplinary approach should be applied to study them. Increasing age-related viability results in more personalised preventive programs in gerontology and geriatrics, and this, ultimately, will improve the quality of life and a level of dignity in geriatric patients.
Keywords: age-related viability, quality of life, aging, biomarkers, gerontoprophylaxis, active longevity.
