The use of povidone-iodine solution in the rectum surgery

Aim: to evaluate the efficacy of antiseptic properties of 10% Betadine solution in the treatment of the operating field and rectal mucosa in coloproctological practice.
Patients and Methods: The analysis of 110 patients was made. The patients were divided into 2 groups by random sampling. The patients of group I (n=60) received the double treatment of the operating field and rectal mucosa with 10% Betadine solution before the surgery, with antibiotics administration in the pre- and the postoperative period. The patients of group II (n=50) received the double treatment of the operating field and rectal mucosa with 10% solution of Betadine, without a preventive course of antibiotics in the pre- and postoperative period. The following parameters were studied in dynamics: the presence of the wound fluid, edema and hyperemia of tissues around the wound, the temperature reaction of the organism, and the leukocyte reaction.
Results: the absence of hyperemia of the skin around the wound and edema of soft tissues was noted in the first group on the average 3.8±1.2 days after the surgery, in the second group — after 4.2±1.3 days (t=0.226, p<0,05). In group I the temperature response of the body and overall health became normal on 3.6±1.1 days after the operation, and in group II — after 4.0±1.0 days (t=0.269, p<0.05). Leukocyte reaction throughout the entire hospitalization period remained normal in both groups and did not differ statistically.
Conclusion: As a result of the study, 10% solution of Betadine proved to be a reliable antiseptic for treating the mucosa and the operating field, preventing postoperative complications after the planned coloproctology. The use of Betadine solution as a monotherapy in the planned coloproctology allows to exclude the use of systemic antibiotics and to avoid the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in the future.
