Aim: to characterize patients with new-onset AF associated/not associated with chronic non-communicable diseases, and to evaluate levels of biological markers of myocardial fibrosis, as well as significant clinical outcomes.
Materials and Methods: 128 patients with new-onset atrial fibrillation including 50 subjects without severe chronic non-communicable diseases and 78 subjects with chronic non-communicable diseases were enrolled in the study. Complaints and medical history were recorded. Laboratory tests of myocardial fibrosis markers (transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), galectin 3), as well as ECG, EchoCG were performed. Adverse clinical outcomes were assessed for 1 year after enrollment.
Results: at baseline, high heart rate (p=0.001), obesity (p<0.001), and hypertension (p<0.001) were significantly higher in the experimental group. According to EchoCG data, a LVEF value in the experimental group was higher than in controls (p=0.025). As for other parameters, no significant differences were reported. The levels of myocardial fibrosis markers showed significant differences between those of TGF-beta and galectin 3 in experimental and control groups (p<0.001). The experimental group demonstrated higher numbers of repeated hospitalizations (p=0.044) and fatal outcomes (p=0.042). Radiofrequency ablations were significantly higher in the experimental group (p=0.031).
Conclusions: patients with chronic non-communicable diseases had significantly more risk factors. They were more likely to develop and to worsen myocardial fibrosis (according to the marker levels measuring). Moreover, adverse clinical outcomes (repeated hospitalization, infarction, stroke, coronary angiography procedures, radiofrequency ablation, and death) were more common in them during the year.
