Atherosclerosis is a common and socially significant disease, and the main cause of morbidity, disability and mortality in the industrialized world. For men, the role of the main sex hormone — testosterone in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and its complications remains insufficiently studied. The mechanism of atherogenesis is complex and involves a lot of interacting complex factors, both internal and external. There is an opinion, that there are gender differences in the atherogenesis mechanisms in men and women, caused by the biological effects of the hormones. The review, based on the results of experimental and clinical studies, highlights current ideas about the relationship between testosterone levels and cardiovascular health, aging, the formation of atherosclerosis, and current ideas about the effects of hormone replacement therapy in men. To compile a review article, available materials from foreign library databases (Library’s MEDLINE / PubMed database) were used.

Key words: testosterone, atherosclerosis, aging, hormone replacement therapy, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke.
