Aim: to perform a comparative analysis of the atomic release profiles of potassium and magnesium from three tablet formulations: the nutraceutical CardioM Potassium Magnesium and two medicinal products.
Materials and Methods: atomic absorption spectrometry was performed to assess dissolution of the samples in three media with pH values of 1.0, 4.5, and 6.8. This method was chosen for its capacity to determine the content of potassium and magnesium atoms regardless of the chemical form of the metal (citrate, aspartate, orotate, or lactate). Concentrations were calculated by the calibration curve method.
Results: in two of the media (pH 1.0 and pH 4.5), maximum release of potassium and magnesium atoms from the comparison drugs was achieved by 30 minutes and remained stable thereafter. For the CardioM Potassium Magnesium nutraceutical, the release profile was characterized by a progressive, near-linear increase in K+ and Mg2+ ion concentrations over time. In the pH 6.8 medium, metal atom release began at 15 minutes and later; however, by 60 minutes, the concentrations of potassium and magnesium released from CardioM Potassium Magnesium exceeded those observed with the comparison drugs.
Conclusion: based on the selected dose, solubility characteristics of the citrate form, and the extent and kinetics of atom release from the tablet formulation, intake of CardioM Potassium Magnesium may be considered an effective approach for the prevention of potassium and magnesium deficiency states in therapeutic and cardiological practice.
Keywords: intracellular magnesium, intracellular potassium, magnesium and potassium citrate, dissolution test, atomic absorption spectrometry.
