The article deals with the heavy menstrual bleedings (HMB), which are defined as an excessive menstrual blood loss (EMBL) (> 80 ml per cycle). The authors also discuss the etiology of HMB: uterine pathology, coagulopathy, ovulation or iatrogenic causes, and treatment of patients: the management of these patients depends on the main cause of HMB, the woman's preferences, their plans regarding the reproductive function. Medication therapy includes the use of hormonal drugs, levonorgestrel-containing intrauterine system, combined hormonal contraceptives. As a haemostatic therapy, tranexamic acid and 1–deamino-8-D-arginine-vasopressin is used. It is possible to combine hormonal and nonhormonal therapy. The result of chronic blood loss is iron deficiency, leading to the development of iron deficiency anemia. Currently, a number of iron preparations with various dosage and composition are available on the pharmacological market. Tardyferone is a long-acting drug containing 80 mg of elemental iron. The maximum absorption of iron occurs in the proximal part of the jejunum. Prolonged release of iron prevents the irritating effect of iron on the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum, which leads to better tolerability than other drugs.
Key words: heavy menstrual bleeding; menorrhagia; hormonal therapy; anemia treatment; efficiency; ferrous sulphate; iron deficiency; iron-deficiency anemia; iron tolerability.
