Background: a group of medical devices, esophagoprotectors, which provide protection for the esophageal mucosa and are designed for the pathogenetic therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is currently being actively studied.
Aim: to assess the degree of adhesion of the esophagoprotector (a combination of hyaluronic acid (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CS)) to the pharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal mucosa, as well as to determine the prospects for its use in the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LFR).
Patients and Methods: the study involved 30 healthy volunteers, divided into two groups (n=15 in each): the main group, in which volunteers received 10 ml of the esophagoprotector solution (HA + CS) containing 1 ml of blue water-soluble food dye, and the control group, in which volunteers received a solution of blue water-soluble food dye without active components. The degree of adhesion was assessed on the original scale from 0 to 3 points based on videolaryngoscopy 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes after esophagoprotector application.
Results: the main group demonstrated statistically significantly higher adhesion compared to the control at all time points except 120 minutes (p <0.001). The maximum adhesion was observed at the 15th minute (average score 3.0), then gradually decreased to 0.2 by the 120th minute. There was no adhesion in the control group (median=0).
Conclusion: the combination of HA and CS has a significant adhesive ability to the pharyngeal and laryngopharyngeal mucosa, maintaining the effect for up to 90 minutes. The results obtained substantiate the efficacy of esophagoprotectors in the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux.
Keywords: laryngopharyngeal reflux, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, degree of adhesion, gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophagoprotection.
