An infection with Helicobacter pylori is the underlying cause of chronic gastritis, which can progress to severe gastroduodenal disease, including gastric cancer. It is recommended that screening and eradication of H. pylori be conducted prior to the development of atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia to prevent gastric cancer. To date, several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of rebamipide as a drug that prevents carcinogenesis in long-term use and provides an additive effect in increasing the rate of H. pylori eradication when added to anti-Helicobacter therapy. The metabolic status involving the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 isoenzyme is considered the key factor in determining the success of standard triple therapy with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Rabeprazole is less dependent on the CYP2C19 genetic polymorphism of PPIs and is superior to other PPIs in eradicating H. pylori as part of standard triple therapy. The combination of rabeprazole and rebamipide in H. pylori eradication regimens is the most effective approach to achieving the highest efficacy.
