An impaired skin barrier plays an important role in many skin diseases and conditions, such as dry skin, sensitive skin, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis. Dexpanthenol improves the hydration of the skin due to its hygroscopic properties and the ability to retain moisture.
Aim: to evaluate the efficacy of topical agents (D-Panthenol Ointment / Cream) in patients with xerosis and pruritis in remission of various dermatoses or associated with somatic diseases.
Patients and Methods: 36 patients aged from 3 months to 49 years with chronic dermatoses in remission (partial remission) or somatic pathology with xerosis and pruritis in the clinical picture. The patients used D-Panthenol cream (n=21) and ointment (n=15) twice a day for 28 days as a monotherapy or as a part of a complex treatment. The effectiveness of treatment was assessed after 28 days.
Results: after 28 days of D-Panthenol application, the Visual Analog scale (VAS) index (pruritis) decreased by 32% (p <0.0001), VAS (xerosis) index by 30% (p <0.0001). Pruritis relieving, improving the quality of night sleep and eliminating the xerosis contributed to improving the quality of life of this category of patients. The tolerability of D-Panthenol drugs was statistically comparable according to the assessment of the researcher (doctor) and the patient in all positions and was 90.6% with the ointment and 97.6% with the cream including good / very good values.
Conclusions: postmarketing research showed a significant improvement in all indices of dermatological status index (pruritis, xerosis), which indicates the advisability of prescribing D-Panthenol to patients with various skin diseases or somatic pathology accompanied by pruritis and xerosis.
