Episodic syndromes in children associated with migraine

Primary headaches are widespread in the pediatric population, and due to coming-of-age, they range from 20% to 80% of cases, in this the diverse clinical manifestations and features of cephalgia, as well as their presence in children, are often underestimated. Episodic syndromes in children associated with migraine are a group of neurological disorders, the correct diagnosis and further therapy of which are a formidable task for clinicians. At present, they include the syndrome of infantile colic, benign paroxysmal torticollis, benign paroxysmal dizziness, cyclic vomiting syndrome, and abdominal migraine. Close attention of clinicians to these paroxysmally observed conditions is primarily due to their insufficient diagnosis and further adequate management of this patients category.
The review focuses on the clinical features of periodically occurring disorders in children of different ages, the practical use of diagnostic criteria and possible approaches to the treatment of these neurological disorders.
Key words: episodic syndromes in children associated with migraine, abdominal migraine, infantile colic, cyclic vomiting syndrome, benign paroxysmal dizziness.
