Background: Anemia prevalence in pregnant women ranges from 15 to 30%, according to the Ministry of Health data, and has increased 6,3 times for the last decade. The most common type is iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Hypochromic microcytic IDA is an independent nosological form, occurring due to decrease of body stores of iron.
Objective: To study Sorbifer efficacy in IDA management in pregnant women.
Material and Methods: The study involved 33 patients with threatened miscarriage, in conjunction with IDA of different severity. All women received convenient treatment aimed to prolong the pregnancy, and Sorbifer (1 tablet 3 times a day for 3-4 weeks). Before and after treatment, hematological parameters of all women were evaluated (red blood cell count, hemoglobin, color index, serum iron, ferritin).
Results and discussion: all patients noted health's improvement after treatment with Sorbifer (disappearance of complaints of weakness, fatigue, sleep disturbance). In 4 weeks of Sorbifer treatment hemoglobin level increase to the lower limit of reference range was observed, as well as the increase of serum iron.
Conclusion: Sorbifer usage in iron deficiency improves health and normalizes blood indicators in the short term. No adverse events and miscarriage were revealed in all pregnant women treated with Sorbifer. Also Sorbifer can be used for IDA management in terms of pregravid preparation. Due to high efficiency and good tolerability profile it can be included into the scheme of therapy for pregnancy prolonging in case of latent iron deficiency.

Key words: anemia, pregnancy, hemoglobin, ferritin, hemosiderin, serum iron, iron supplements, red blood cells, reticulocytes, blood loss, Sorbifer.
